Damian Bancks was born in Sydney, Australia where, in his twenties he discovered an interest in photography. At the age of 30 he moved to Waiheke Island, New Zealand for 4 years. Upon returning to Australia he settled in Wollongong on the south coast of N.S.W. where he studied the Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts at West Wollongong TAFE majoring in Painting.
For 2 years while studying he served on the Management Committee of the Artist Run Initiative, Project Contemporary Artspace in Wollongong.
Over the past few years Damian has exhibited frequently in Wollongong including a huge solo exhibition ‘ KICKING UP A STORM’ at Project Contemporary Artspace in 2008.
In 2009 Damian was selected to be a part of the inaugural LOCAL : CURRENT exhibition at WOLLONGONG CITY GALLERY.
In late 2007 Damian started what was to become BUNKERSHED STUDIOS in Wollongong, culminating in the ‘BUNKERSHED’ group exhibition at Project Contemporary Artspace in 2010.
2011 saw Damian open his own commercial art gallery THE HANGING SPACE in Wollongongs northern suburbs.
